Lifehacker says we’re the BEST Speed Dial for Firefox!

Why do I need Speed Dial?

First of all, it’s very convenient—your favorite sites are always within immediate reach. Moreover, it saves time—you don’t have to leaf through countless bookmarks. Everything’s right in view.

This extension takes over your new tab and changes your search bar inside FVD Speed Dial to Bing.

— Speed Dial: allows you to create your own Dials
— Most-Visited: lists the sites you visit most often. Each Dial contains a group with the full list of URLs you’ve visited. You can add any Dial from the Most-Visited category to your Speed Dial.
— Recently Closed: If you’ve closed a page by mistake and don’t know how to find it again, you’ll see it in the Recently Closed category.

Want access to your favorite sites from any computer? It’s easy! The Syncing feature will bring you just a click away from the sites you need at any moment!

— Quick Dial — the extension replaces the start page and new pages with the FVD Speed Dial page
— Block by URL or domain: This feature allows you to exclude unwanted URLs from Speed Dial
— Background templates (similar to wallpapers in Windows) in browser window
— Double-clicking on the space near the search form minimizes it. Double-clicking on the white space near Dials allows you to hide them as well
— Hold the left mouse button and move the mouse to the right or to the left in order to switch from one mode to another. Available modes are: Speed Dial, Most Visited, Recently Closed
— Four thumbnail sizes: Big, Medium, Small, and List (shows a list for those who prefer a compact view)
— Customizable background colors
— Several modes for setting the background image: Fill, Fit, Stretch, Tile, and Center (the same as in Windows)
— Customizable font size and color in Speed Dial
— Activation/Deactivation Favicon+Title and URL under the Dials
— Activate or deactivate Flash, Silverlight, and JavaScript when creating a screenshot for the Dial
— Customizable page-opening mode in the Speed Dial: in the current tab (Hotkey: Ctrl+Click); in a background tab (Hotkey: Ctrl+Shift+Click).
— Customizable number of rows in the Speed Dial. Auto-mode available.
— Popular group: automatically displays the most popular Dials
— Groups: Create, Delete, and Edit. You can add Dials to the groups
— Give your Dials a fully customizable design—play with size, transparency, fonts, and colors
— Customize the background color—you can even include uploads of your own pics!
— Easy backup: simply export a file with your Dials into a folder on your hard drive

How to get Speed Dial in Firefox

It’s in Opera, Chrome, Safari, and Internet Explorer. Firefox doesn’t have the new tab Speed Dial feature by default, but add-ons can help you out. Here are four that will give you Speed Dial powers.

While it’s got Sync, tabs on top, and a menu button, Firefox still lacks one feature that all the other major browsers have in one form or another: the «speed dial.» Originally from Opera, the feature is the visual implementation of your most recently or most frequently visited Web sites on the new tab page. Firefox add-ons have stepped up to fill the dial void, but implementation in each is uneven.

Speed Dial Screenshot by Seth Rosenblatt/CNET

Speed Dial (download) is the most robust of the four add-ons we’re looking at today. It’s highly customizable, offering the deep range of customizations that come with the best Firefox add-ons. Among the multitude of choices is the option to control whether it opens in new tabs or new windows; set the number of «dials,» create dial groups, and hook them to hot key combinations for quick launching; and customize the look of each dial’s thumbnail. It comes with a default weather dial in the number one position, although you can change that.

It has two problems, though. One is that it lacks the ability to automatically read your most frequently visited Web sites or most recently visited Web sites, which means that it requires your input before the dials get created, and the dials will never «learn» from your browsing habits. The second is that it appeared to slow down the browser’s behavior slightly.

AutoDial 9 Screenshot by Seth Rosenblatt/CNET

Auto Dial 9 (download) goes in the opposite direction. It looks solely at your most frequently visited and most recently visited Web sites, and provides little in the way of ancillary customizations. There are some tweaks that are available in about:config after you install the add-on, and the extension’s More Info page in the add-ons manager provides details on those. They are not an impressive set of customizations, though, dealing with button size and row width.

When you mouse over a link, which have been arranged in a slightly chaotic text cluster with inconsistent favicon support, a red X appears in the corner. Click it to remove the link from the list. While I like the concept of a pure frequently and recently visited list, this particular implementation is too disorganized to be overly useful.

Fast Dial 3.4 Screenshot by Seth Rosenblatt/CNET

Fast Dial 3.4 (download) behaves similarly to Speed Dial, but with fewer customization options. It also lacks the frequently and recently visited automation, and I actually had to restart the browser twice before it would show up in a new «new tab» page. You can add a new dial by right-clicking on an Web site you’re currently looking at, and choosing the Fast Dial option. Or from a new tab, double-click on the dial and you can manually add a site. When getting started, I found that adding the toolbar button made accessing the dial page much easier than without it. It does let you do things like expand the grid, and set a custom favicon and URL, small tweaks that some may appreciate. It didn’t present any of the performance hang-ups that can annoy in Speed Dial.

Sugestron Speed Dial 0.9.12 Screenshot by Seth Rosenblatt/CNET

The add-on that most closely resembles speed dial implementation in other browsers is Sugestron Speed Dial 0.9.12. It’s limited to eight dials, and it has kludgy, awkwardly large icons for pinning sites to the dial and removing them. However, it does read your history accurately for frequently visited and recently visited sites. In fact, it’s so accurate it’ll pick up on visits to internal browser tools like the add-ons manager (about:addons).

If you’re looking for a simple port of the basic dial features in your speed dial add-on, Sugestron’s version is the way to go. Otherwise, Speed Dial offers the in-depth options that most people will want, while Fast Dial can provide you with a lightweight alternative to Speed Dial.

Yet another speed dial is an simple, customizable new tab replacement extension for Firefox and Chrome

Yet another speed dial! No, I’m not complaining about anything. That’s the name of a speed dial extension for Firefox and Chrome.

Yet another speed dial is an simple, customizable new tab replacement extension for Firefox and Chrome

The add-on is meant to replicate Opera browser’s famous feature, and it does so rather nicely.

Once installed, Yet another speed dial takes over the new tab. The add-on starts with a blank page, and displays some steps to help you get started.

    Yet another speed dial start

    Add speed dials

The easiest way to add speed dials is to visit any web page and right-click on it and select «Add to Speed Dial» from the context menu. The extension saves a thumbnail screenshot of the page to be used for the dial.

    add a dial using menu

The second method is to click on the new tab button, and then on the large + button to add a new site. Paste the URL of the website to be added in the text field, and click on «Add to Speed Dial». The add-on opens a new tab to load the site to save its thumbnail.

    Yet another speed dial add

Another way to add dials is by bookmarking a page and placing it in the Other Bookmarks > Speed Dial folder. This also ensures your bookmarks are synced with your Firefox/Google account.

    add a dial using bookmarks

Rearrange the position of a dial by dragging it to a different place. Right-click on a dial to open it in a new tab, new window or private window. It can also be used to delete a dial. You may edit a dial’s settings including the URL and the image, the extension lets you choose between the web page thumbnail or the favicon, or you can use a custom image from your computer.

    Yet another speed dial edit

Right-click anywhere on a new tab, or click on the gear icon in the top right corner of the add-on’s page to access its settings. Yet another speed dial lets you use your own wallpaper as the background. Prefer a solid color instead, you can customize that too. Don’t like the label (title) displayed below every dial, toggle the setting. The + button (Add side) can be disabled as well. The last option on the settings page sets the dials to be vertically aligned on the screen. Hit the save button to apply the changes that you’ve made.

    Incompatibility with Firefox Containers

Yet another speed dial worked well with Chrome (Microsoft Edge Chromium), but I had some trouble with the extension on Firefox. It wouldn’t capture the images for the dial, or even add the dial when I used the right-click menu. The issues page on the add-on’s GitHub didn’t have any reports related to this. I had almost given up on the add-on thinking it was broken, and if there hadn’t been a Chrome extension, I certainly would’ve. That’s what made me curious, why it would work in one browser but not in the other.

    Yet another speed dial chrome

I disabled some of my other add-ons in Firefox to narrow down the issue. Eventually, I found the answer. It appears the extension is not compatible with Firefox Containers. When I tried to add a dial for a web page that is configured to load in a container, the extension would not finish capturing the images. Also, the right-click menu was non-responsive when used with contained websites.

Yet another speed dial firefox containers issue

For e.g. I’ve set Ghacks, Reddit, Google (Gmail, Docs, etc.,) to load in their own Firefox Containers. When I tried to add these pages to the dials, only one of these worked (Google.com). Even Google’s sub-domains like Gmail and YouTube couldn’t be added.

Yet another speed dial firefox containers issue 2

This wasn’t the case for web pages that were loaded normally (no containers). For e.g. Yahoo, GitHub, SourceForge, etc. The extension’s «Add to dial menu» and + button worked perfectly with normal pages.

Yet another speed dial firefox containers disabled

To put this theory to the test, all I had to do was disable the Firefox Multi-Account Containers add-on, and then try adding the web pages using Yet another speed dial. It worked. You may want to use this as a temporary workaround, but I won’t recommend disabling containers permanently, because Privacy & Security > convenience anyday.

Yet another speed dial is an open source extension. Download it for Chrome or Firefox. It does not sync to any cloud service, which is a good thing. There are no way to organize dials in folders, and the lack of an option to backup your dials is a bit disappointing as well, since there’s no way to restore dials in case you reset Firefox (or Chrome).

It means you’ve got some add-ons that are not multiprocess compatible or are not WebExtensions.

This restriction is reversible. To do so go to about:config, look for the setting:

. and set it to true.

This was a very useful extension. I’m sad that it now appears to be an orphan with no indication that it will be updated for current/future versions of firefox.

I’m now using GroupSpeedDial. It’s the closest I’ve found to this extension, and is actively under development. https://fastaddons.com/
