Two-minute review
The Logitech Z407 is somewhat of a rarity. Even now, if you want an excellent set of computer speakers, chances are you’ll have to spend a little more than $100/£100. Spend less, and you’re likely to end up with ones that sound middling at best.
Once in a while though, we are treated with more than decent computer speakers that not only look great but sound great as well. And, the Logitech Z407 is one such peripheral.
This fairly new release from Logitech has surprised us in many ways, delivering a powerful sound, rumbling bass, several connectivity options, and a nifty wireless dial for only $79 (£79, AU$149).
For that same price, the older Edifier M3200 is slightly less powerful and doesn’t offer Bluetooth connectivity. Meanwhile, the 2019-released Creative T100 may boast satellites that offer the same level of audio power, but doesn’t have a subwoofer, is slightly bigger, and costs $20/£20 more – which makes the Z407 a better value.
That value starts in design. At 7.87 x 3.70 x 3.35 inches (satellites) with a 9.45 x 9.21 x 7.09-inch sub, the Logitech Z407 is small enough to fit perfectly on a small desk. The speakers also sport a smart look, with capsule-shaped satellites and a dark gray finish that makes it a classy addition to work and creative setups. And, it has an overall rigid build that should see it last several years.
The Logitech Z407 is also versatile. The removable satellite stands may be attached in two ways so you can either have a horizontal or an upright setup. It also has a wireless control dial with a 20-meter range, and three connectivity options – Bluetooth, micro USB, and the 3.5 mm – which further boosts its versatility.
The wireless dial may be confusing at first, especially because not all media apps offer full support: Spotify does, but Apple TV on Mac doesn’t support the skip or forward functionality while Netflix on Windows won’t even let you rewind with it. On top of that, it may take you a bit to figure out whether you’re controlling the volume or the bass level as you’re essentially using the same physical dial for both.
We’re not saying it’s convoluted, just that it’s not as straightforward as most people (aka those who won’t bother reading the manual) would prefer. However, once you do get used to how the dial works, it’ll feel like an extension of the arm.
Just because there’s wireless connectivity, doesn’t mean you’ll be going cable-free with these speakers. The satellites themselves need to be connected to the sub via RCA cables. However, you still have the option to connect the system to your computer or device via Bluetooth, which means that the clutter can stay behind your desk where it belongs.
Since the Bluetooth connectivity is pretty darn good and up to par with the 3.5mm option, you can stick with it for convenience and still get excellent, lag-free audio. For slightly higher quality sound, the micro USB connection seems to have a bit more high end and detail.
When it comes to audio quality, the Logitech Z407 gets right what so many cheaper computer speakers fail to do. In fact, for a computer speaker system this compact, it blasts out surprisingly hefty audio in terms of quality and volume.
Its sound may be slightly lacking in detail and its sub can overpower the rest of the frequencies when it’s at a higher volume (though a simple turn of the dial should fix it right up). However, the Logitech Z407 still sounds impressive.
Unlike other affordable speakers out there that tend to bump up their bass and high end, which typically make them sound harsh and easily fatiguing, this offering from Logitech is mid-focused, allowing it to produce a richer, warmer sound. The subwoofer has a lot of power for its size, with a down-firing driver that gives it a whole lot of rumble. Trust us: even at a lower bass level, you will hear AND feel this sub.
You’ll get decent separation when you’re sitting directly in front of it, which is where you’re meant to experience computer speakers. However, there’s no virtual surround sound feature here so you’re really only experiencing 2.1 audio, which means that you’ll hear things from the left, the right, and somewhere in between… but that’s about it.
As a result, it may not be immersive enough for hardcore gamers. If you’re looking for something that will help you game better, you’re better off with a gaming headset with surround sound features.
Still, the Logitech Z407 boasts plenty of rumble and produces terrific sound quality that will satisfy most gamers as well as users looking to consume media – whether that’s music or movies. And, its added perk of being versatile will benefit every type of user.
Setup and interface
Setting up the Logitech Z407 speakers is painless. In the box you’ll find the wireless control puck, left and right speakers with attached color-coded cables, a subwoofer, the power cable, and an optional 3.5mm male-to-male headphone jack cable. You can also connect using a Micro USB cable, but that’s not included.
After plugging the subwoofer into the wall and connecting the left and right speakers to the appropriate sockets on the back of the subwoofer, all that’s left to do is insert the included AAA batteries into that wireless puck and hit the Bluetooth connect button on the bottom. The system will make a noise that indicates it’s looking for a suitable Bluetooth partner, and you can then select the device from your Bluetooth menu on either your computer or smartphone.
Once connected, volume can be controlled by spinning the puck left or right. The top rotates a full 360 degrees and the bottom stays affixed to your desk thanks to a snug rubberized pad. When you spin the puck, it gives you feedback via a light click — almost like the «Wheel of Fortune» wheel if the pegs were made of rubber. It’s nearly silent, but you can feel the movement clearly. Pressing down on the center of the puck will pause or play music, hitting it twice will skip forward, and hitting it three times will skip back. These are pretty standard controls, but they work great.
To control the bass level, you have to press and hold the top of the puck down for two seconds. It will then switch from volume control to bass level, and you can toggle it up or down from there. You have to hold the puck down for two more seconds to revert back to volume control. This isn’t a particularly fast process, and there’s no visual indication of what level your bass is set to. Instead, the speaker plays a chime when you hit either the max or the minimum bass setting. It’s not the best user experience, but it gets the job done.
To swap between Bluetooth and wired connectivity, you have to use the two buttons found on the bottom of the control dial. Hitting either the Bluetooth button or the AUX button once will quickly change the source. When in Bluetooth mode, you need to have the wireless puck in order to command the connection. While wired, you can use the puck to get access to all the controls found in Bluetooth mode, but you can also fully disconnect the puck and the speakers will work just fine.
There doesn’t seem to be a way to tell the speakers to go to a wired connection if the battery dies in the puck, however, so you’ll have to do this preemptively. Still, it’s nice that Logitech hasn’t make the wireless puck a necessary part of the system.
It should be noted that only way to connect a pair of headphones to the system is through the AUX port on the subwoofer. Some people value an integrated headphone port right on the front of the speakers themselves, and older wired Logitech models offer this connection right on the control puck. With the switch to a wireless puck, that port has now been ditched. If that’s important to you, you might want to look elsewhere.

Z407 Design and Features
Available in black, the Z407 system comes with dual 10-watt satellite speakers with roughly 2.3-inch drivers, and a 20-watt subwoofer with a down-firing, roughly 5-inch driver. The left and right satellite speakers measure 7.9 by 3.7 by 3.3 inches (HWD), and the sub is 9.5 by 9.2 by 7.0 inches.
There are detachable stands for the satellites, and they can snap into the base so the speakers stand upright, and tilt back at angle to more accurately align with your ears—or they can snap into the long end of the speaker so that the satellites rest horizontally on a surface. The drivers are also placed at the top of the satellites (when in vertical positioning) so that the upward angle doesn’t need to be as severe to line up with your ears. We see plenty of desktop speakers get this wrong, but not only do you have the vertical/horizontal option here, you get proper driver alignment with your ears, which ensures a better listening experience.

The speakers connect via semi-hardwired RCA-style cabling to the back panel of the subwoofer. This back panel also houses a micro USB port for computer audio (no cable is included) and a 3.5mm aux input for connecting computers or mobile devices with headphone jacks (a cable is included for this input). The wires are on the short side, however, and thus may dictate speaker and/or subwoofer placement to an extent.

The system comes with a wireless desktop remote dial, roughly 2.8 inches in diameter. The remote runs on two (included) AAA batteries. The dial has no labels on it whatsoever—just a black push-button top for a surface. One tap controls playback, two taps skip forward a track, and three taps navigate backward a track. The top is also a rotating dial—turning it to the right increases volume levels, while turning it left cuts volume levels. The Logitech Z407 Bluetooth [1] computer speakers come in a matte graphite gray to near black color. It seems like a full sound system all on its own with the inclusion of a downward-firing subwoofer that rumbles as well as two 10-watt satellite speakers. To give you full control over the volume, bass, and more, the Z407 also has a wireless control dial.
What’s great about the two oval-shaped satellite speakers is they feature a detachable stand, which allows users to angle them as they please. Our experts are raving about the versatility of the vertically or horizontally placed speakers.
There are plenty of connections located on the back of each component, but our team will get into that later. One of the best things about the Z407 is the wireless dial it comes with.
There are AAA batteries included with the system, and the dial only features one click button, as well as the play/pause button. This is a very straightforward design if you want to adjust volume levels or skip a song with a simple press.
The button also doubles as a rotating dial for incremental volume adjustments, which is easier to use than pressing the button. On the bottom of the control wireless dial is a Bluetooth pairing button and a button that allows you to easily set and switch from Bluetooth to other wireless devices.
Another great feature about the Z407 is its compatibility with Bluetooth 5.0, which is much stabler and also the current standard of Bluetooth wireless connections.

Внутри каждого сателлита установлен 3-дюймовый динамик. Да, маленькая сетка над основным динамиком — это бутафория твиттера. Обманка, которую лично мне совершенно непонятно, зачем тут применили. С претензией на более крутой внешний вид? Оказалось, что «король то голый!» и все претензии ничего не стоят.

А в сабвуфере разместился один большой, 5,25-дюймовый, низкочастотный спикер. Все это относительно конструкции самих динамиков.
Теперь о качестве звука. Хочу предупредить сразу. Я не считаю себя матерым или каким-то иным слухачем. Кроме того, у меня нет специального измерительного микрофона и выделенной звуковой карты.
Зато есть давно полюбившаяся мне акустика Harman Kardon Soundsticks III. Ее вполне можно считать компьютерной, так как она не претендует на звание системы для домашнего кинотеатра или чего-то более-менее серьезного. Таким образом, далее будет сравнение двух акустик, причем, субъективное.
Ответственность снял, пора делиться впечатлениями.
Однако тут важно сделать одно замечание. Звучание мне не понравилось в отрыве от реальной стоимости колонок, а также, если сравнивать его по этому параметру, с тем же решением от Harman Kardon.
Опишу немного в деталях, что меня насторожило, а потом разберем ситуацию под несколько другим углом.
На мой вкус, сателлиты звучат глуховато. Звук не чистый, какой-то гулкий и слегка резонирующий. Весь спектр частот присутствует, но мне не нравится, как они звучат.
Например, низкие частоты мне не понравились потому, что бас тут гулкий, какой-то размазанный. Он не стучит, не бьет и просто обозначен, если так можно выразиться.
В Soundstick III такой ситуации нет. Звучание чистое, приятное и мягкое. Никакой гулкости или звенящих шумов нет. Эта акустика отрабатывает свою задачу абсолютно точно, в отличии от Z333.
Теперь, как и обещал, слегка иной подход. Поместил альтернативное, собственное же мнение, в вывод, ибо пора подводить итоги. Причем, корректные.
Важно помнить, что, во-первых, мы имеем дело с известным, мировым брендом Logitech. Марка никогда не производила ерундовые устройства за три копейки для участия в тендерах для госорганов и так далее. Большинство их продукции весьма неплохого качества, с позиционированием, маркетингом и так далее. Отсюда бывает, что встречается накрутка за бренд. Однако в нашем случае, если она и есть, то минимальная.
Во-вторых, компьютерная акустика пусть даже и 2.1 стоит сейчас достаточно заметных денег. Объяснение простое: доллар, нефть, Сирия и так далее. Попробуйте пробежаться по конкурентам и вы поймете, что вариантов оказывается не так-то и много.
В-третьих, если не сравнивать Z333 напрямую с Harman Kardon Soundsticks III, которые дороже наших колонок чуть более, чем в два раза, то Logitech создали достаточно неплохую, приятную, без изысков, но все-таки качественную акустику.
Звучание пусть и не идеальное, но достаточно неплохое. Уши я свои не считаю оскорбленными, а скорее, наоборот. Послушал музыки и поиграл в CS вдоволь.
